Kakamega Homeboyz; the Western part of Kenya is well known to be the hub of the most interesting games in the country. However, football stands out to be one a lover of many in that region. Most football fans from that part, if they are not supporting the famous AFC Leopards definitely they supporting Kakamega Homeboyz.
Kakamega being the youngest founded team from the Western part of Kenya, we take a look at some of the engrossing facts about the club, from the owner, leadership, worth and so much more.
Kakamega Homeboyz F.C
Kakamega Homeboyz is a professional football club based in Kakamega, Kenya participating in the Kenya Premier League (KPL). Most of the fans refer to them as “Vijana wa Nyumba” (Homeboyz). The Club was founded in 2010 but received its promotion to the Kenya Premier League in 2013 after a successful season at the FKF Division One in the 2012 season.
However, despite being promoted in 2013 they were relegated at the end of their first season. Following the relegation, they dropped back to playing in the National Super League in the Western region.
In 2014, many thought they had earned their spot back in the top league. However, despite the struggle to earn their spot back Homebyz was deducted three points which were awarded to Shabana FC.
After the deduction of the three points, Homeboyz left the helm to Zoo Kericho while Shabana which benefited from points deducted from other teams, ended up being named as runner’s-up.
KPL only receives two teams from the FKF, but in 2015 the president of FKF who was also the patron of Shabana tried to promote three teams in an attempt to please the Homeboyz.
Following the misunderstanding between KPL and FKF, no team was promoted to the top league that year. After being denied the chance to join the top league in 2014, in 2015 the team made sure they finished at the top and reclaimed their sport back at the KPL at the start of the 2016 season.
Kakamega Homeboyz Owner, Coach and Captain
The Club was founded by a football die-hard fan, Cleophas Shimanyula well known as Toto. His main aim while opening the team was not for financial gain but to help and nature young talented youth in the region.
He began as a Matatu tout before founding his own transport company and he knew how life on the ground was hard. In order to divert the mind of many youths from the negative hustles, he decided to engage them in sports.
For the past 12 years the club has been in existence it has been receiving a massive following from the Luhya community as well as other parts of Kenya.
Currently, the team is under Bernard Mwalala, serving as the head coach while Geoffrey Oputi serves as the team’s captain.
Home Stadium
Being the only big club in Kakamega the club occupies the Bukhungu Stadium which has wort capacity of 30,000 spectators in the stands. When it comes to playing kits the team has four main kits, Yellow, Green, Red, and White.
Kakamega Homeboyz Worth and Sponsors
The club can be ranked as one of the wealthiest teams in Kenya’s league since the club has never experienced any payment dispute from its staff. Its actual net worth is not known at the moment since the owner operates things from a confidential angle. At the moment the club receives its sponsorship from the Mozzart Bet, a betting company operating in Kenya.
