Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi was born on September 21, 1960, in Sabatia, Vihiga District. He grew up in a Quaker Christian Denomination family speaking the Luhya tribe’s Maragoli ethnic dialect.

Mudavadi’s political career began in 1989 when he was elected to the Sabatia constituency on the KANU party ticket after his father died. Mudavadi was appointed Minister in charge of the Ministry of Supplies and Marketing by then-President Moi.

Later, in 1993, he was appointed as a minister to head the Ministry of Finance. He was a deputy prime minister in the grand coalition government, as well as deputy president during the Moi regime in 2002.
Mudavadi was the running mate for KANU presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta in 2002. Later that year, he joined the ODM party as Raila Odinga’s running mate. Mudavadi was a member of the NASA coalition under his ANC party in 2017.
In the 2022 general election, Mudavadi backed former Deputy President William Ruto, who defeated former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Ruto recently named Musalia Mudavadi as the new prime cabinet secretary, following his inauguration.
